He first managed two (cattle?) stations then accompanied Ludwig Leichhardt on his journey to Port Essington which departed on 1 October 1844. Hodgson was forced to return on November 5 due to fatigue and a lack of provisions. He organized an unsuccessful search party to find the Leichhardt party after hearing that it had come into trouble.
