After graduating in medicine Holroyd worked for some time as a physician in the United Kingdom, then turned his attentions to law. He eventually migrated first to New Zealand (1843) and then Australia (1844) where he soon joined the New South Wales Bar. Holroyd built up a successful legal practice, which involved acting as crown prosecutor on occasions. In 1851 he entered New South Wales parliament and remained a member until 1864.
