Between 1853 and 1857 Dallachy made several expeditions throughout Victoria to collect botanical specimens, sometimes in company with Ferdinand Mueller. When Mueller was appointed Director of the Gardens in 1857, Dallachy became Curator, as well as being a field collector for Mueller. In 1861 Dallachy was retrenched and for a short time ran his own nursery before moving to the Rockingham Bay area of North Queensland.
