The Cunningham Dax Collection comprises of more than 12,000 works of art by people who have experienced mental illness of psychological trauma. The Collection was started by Dr Eric Cunningham Dax, who introduced many changes into the treatment of mental health in Victoria, after taking up an appointment as Chairman of the Mental Hygiene Authority, Victoria, in 1952. Dax recognised the therapeutic benefits of art, as well as the potential use of such artworks in the education of mental health staff and the general public. The Collection continues to conserve and exhibit these works, as well as acquiring new works.
