The hospital was originally located in a small house in Stephen Street (now Exhibition Street), moving to larger premises in Spring Street in 1873 and to Carlton in 1875. In the 1920s and 1930s the hospital built an orthopaedic hospital at Mt Eliza to cope with problems such as poliomyelitis and tuberculosis.
