It was the brainchild of Dr Edward Derrick, an early Director of the Queensland State Health Department Laboratory of Microbiology and Pathology. It became one of Australia's top medical research and teaching institutes. In 2013 Toowoomba philanthropist Clive Berghofer donated $50.1 million to the Institute, the largest donation by an individual in Australian history.
