Members come from a wide range of professions and interests. These interests are reflected in the Society's special interest groups (known as Research Chapters) which include agricultural landscape; arid ecology; Australian vegetation classification; fire ecology and management; insect ecology; invasive species; plant soil ecology; quantitative biology; science communication; seed ecology; theory of Australian ecosystems; and urban ecology. The Society offers an extensive range of awards and grants, including its Gold Medal, the Australian Ecology Research Award, and grants to students and early-career ecologists. It's publications program began in1962 when the first volume of its Newsletter was issued.
