Prior to this biochemists were associated with colleagues through Section N (Physiology) of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science. From its beginning the Society included state representatives in its executive group, and conducted annual scientific meetings. The Society recognised significant contributions to biochemistry through the awarding of its Research Medal and the Lemberg Medal and Oration. Between 1970 and 1990 the Society published the ABS newsletter (volumes 1-21). In 1990 the Society became the Australian Society for Biochemical and Molecular Biology.
