Its principal purpose is to promote the study of palaeontology and associated sciences through publications, regular meetings, sponsoring student events, and funding a program of grants and awards. The focus is on the Australasian region. Members voted to shorten the Association's name to Australasian Palaeontologists in 2015. The Association maintains the Australian Fossil National Species List
