<abstract>The Zoological Society of Victoria was formed in 1857 for the purpose of establishing a zoo in Melbourne. A zoo was initially established in Richmond, on the bank of the Yarra River, before moving to its present site in Royal Park. In 1861 the Zoological Society of Victoria was succeeded by the Acclimatisation Society of Victoria.</abstract>
