<biogHist>
The State Herbarium of South Australia was established in 1954 when earlier South Australian plant collections were brought together. These included the former collections of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens; and collections from the South Australia Museum, the Waite Agricultural Research Institute, the Field Naturalists Club of South Australia, and the Department of Botany at the University of Adelaide. The latter included the J. M. Black Herbarium. Situated within the Gardens, the Herbarium is the major centre for the study of the systematics, biodiversity, biogeography and conservation of the South Australian flora, fungi and algae. It is also the centre for the deposition of voucher specimens for this flora. The Herbarium and Gardens are administered under the <span style="font-style:italic">Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium Act</span> of 1978, under the oversight of the Board of the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium.
<p>Papers resulting from the research of botanists at the Herbarium are published in the <span style="font-style:italic">Journal of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens</span> (ISSN 0313-4083): in 2018 it was renamed <span style="font-style:italic">Swainsona</span>.</p>
