It replaced the CRC for the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Environment. The CRC undertook research in oceanography, glaciology, polar atmospheric physics, palaeo-reconstruction, microbiology, politics, law and international relations and remote sensing. On 1 July 2003 the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre (ACE CRC) was formed when it received a seven year grant and took over the role of the CRC for Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.
