From an initial 130 foundation Members, it has become the major professional association for marine scientists from all disciplines in Australia. The Association's aims focus on promoting, developing and assisting the study of marine sciences in Australia, and providing a means of communication and exchange of ideas. Honorary Life Membership is conferred in recognition of distinguished marine research or for meritorious service to, or 40 years' continuous membership of, the Association. The Silver Jubilee Award has been presented since 1988 to scientists who have made an outstanding contributions to Australian marine research, while the Technical Award has since 1990 acknowledged outstanding achievements in the field of technical support to marine science in Australia.
