Members come from a wide range of biological disciplines including behavioural and community ecology, population genetics, management and conservation. Objectives include the scientific study of mammals in the Australasian region and the promotion of their conservation; the provision a body of informed opinion available to other organisations and people; and broad cooperation with other organisations in pursuit of these of these aims. The Society holds annual scientific meetings and has published Australian mammalogy (formerly the Journal of the Australian Mammal Society since 1972. Honorary Life Membership is awarded to members who have provided long standing service to the Society and in the advancement of substantive knowledge of Australasian mammals. The Society's other major award is the Ellis Troughton Memorial Award given recognition of the significant contribution of a member of the Society to Australian mammalogy.
