It was founded in August 1965 after three years of discussion between members of existing entomological societies from all states, and held its first annual general meeting in 1967. A major reason for its foundation was the perceived need for an coordinated entomological voice at a national level, something then lacking. The Society holds regular meetings, including with the New Zealand Entomological Society and hosting the International Congress of Entomology.

Awards presented by the Society include:
Honorary Membership: recognises members of the society who have contributed to the welfare of the society over many years as well as contributing meaningfully to entomology;
Pat Marks Medal: recognises members of the Society who have achieved an outstanding lifetime career in entomology and made significant contributions to the Society;
Ian Mackerras Medal: recognises excellence in entomological research by mid-career entomologists who are members of the Society;
Penny Gullan Award: recognises excellence in scientific achievement in entomology by early career researchers.
