The Collection has been under the control of several CSIRO Divisions, in 2002 it was part of Sustainable Ecosystems. From their Web site, April 2002: "The primary goal of the Australia National Wildlife Collection is the provision of a national reference record of Australia's vertebrate fauna: its mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians." In 2014 the Australian National Wildlife Collection joined other CSIRO natural history collections as part of the National Research Collections Australia. In 2025 a state-of-the-art building called Diversity was opened in Canberra, to house the irreplaceable collections of the Australian National Insect Collection and the Australian National Wildlife Collection.
