The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is part of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences' School of Medicine. It was formerly known as the Russell Grimwade School of Biochemistry. Previously, Biochemistry had been taught at the University within the Physiology Department. William John Young was appointed the first lecturer of Biochemistry in 1920 and went on to become the foundation Professor of Biochemistry in 1938. The first Biochemistry building was constructed in 1956, funded largely by an endowment from Russell Grimwade. Today the Department of Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology focuses on the areas of biochemistry, gene technology, proteomics and macromolecular imaging.
