Established in 1955, the Society comprises a federal council and seven branches. Aims of the Society include: to promote the importance of soil in the Australian environment; to develop a strong and collaborative soil science community; and advance the professional capabilities of members. The Certified Professional Soil Scientist (CPSS) Program was introduced in 1996 in response to demand from government bodies for accredited professionals in the field. In 2011 the Society adopted as its public name Soil Science Australia. The Society is a member of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) and contributes to the Australian National Committee on Soil and Terrain (NCST).

L. J. H. Teakle Award (2010 - ): awarded annually to a financial member, for outstanding effort in promoting and raising awareness of soil science;
Honorary Life membership: awarded to members have given significant service to the Society and/or the eminent service to the profession of soil science.
