It was originally formed in 1937 when the Council of the Standards Association nominated eight engineers to form the Australian committee of the International Committee on Large Dams. The founding committee comprised: H. H. Dare, as chairman, and S. T. Farnsworth (New South Wales); A. E. Kelso, L. R. East (Victoria); W. H. R. Nimmo (Queensland); H. T. M. Angwin (South Australia); R. J. Dumas (Western Australia); and G. D. Balsille (Tasmania). ANCOLD was incorporated under the NSW Incorporations Act in 1984, and is an active member of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) which has around 100 member countries.
