The first World War hindered the early years of the institute, its first full-time director was not appointed until 1919, when Dr Sydney Patterson took the post. Other directors of the Institute have been Professor Charles Kellaway (1923-1944), Sir Macfarlane Burnet (1944-1965), Sir Gustav Nossal (1965-1996) and Suzanne Cory (1996-). The Institute was originally located at the Melbourne Hospital in Lonsdale street, later moving with the Hospital to Parkville, finally gaining their own new building, in Parkville, in the 1980s.

From their Web site, January 2003: "The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) is one of Australia's foremost medical research establishments, its mission being 'mastery of disease through discovery'. Over many decades, advances and discoveries at the Institute have led to significant benefits for patients throughout the world."
