This Act amended the Land Utilization Act 1947 (No.5226) and provided for the 'Soil Conservation Authority' to replace the 'Soil Conservation Board'. The Soil Conservation Authority consisted of three full-time members, of whom 'one shall be a person with practical farm experience and with a knowledge of soil conservation'. The Authority worked closely with landholders and governmental authorities, advising them on land uses that matched land capabilities. From 1984 the policy, planning and operational responsibilities of the Soil Conservation Authority were carried out by the Department of Conservation, Forests and Lands. In 1987 the Soil Conservation Authority was abolished and responsibility for the statutory provisions of the Soil Conservation and Land Utilisation Act 1958 (No.6372) were transferred to the Secretary of the Department and the Minister.
