It was commissioned by the government owned State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) in the 1980s. It is the largest single brown coal-powered station in the state. In 2004 Loy Yang A power station was bought by the Great Energy Alliance Corporation (GEAC) which was made up of the Australian Gas Light Company (AGL), the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and a group of Commonwealth Bank led investors.
