The Royal Flying Doctor Service was established in Cloncurry, in 1928, with the aim of providing medical services to remote areas of inland Australia. The first flight took place on May 17 1928, from Cloncurry to Julia Creek. The Service has grown over the years, with new bases founded and the area covered broadened. Bases, such as Cloncurry have been closed or relocated as needs change and more central locations required.
