The Queensland Forest Service was established in 1989 and inherited the functions of the former Department of Forestry. It carried out several years of silvicultural experiments before launching its first commercial pine plantation in 1920/1921. During that season, more than 60 000 nursery-raised seedlings, mostly hoop and bunya pine, were planted on 113 acres in three areas of the State - the Mary Valley, Atherton and Fraser Island.
