The Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research was initially part of the Victorian Department of Natural Resources and Environment. However, in 2002 the Institute was transferred over to the newly formed Department of Sustainability and Environment.

From http://www.nre.vic.gov.au/farming/services/inst.htm (16-07-2001) "ARI conducts research and surveys to assist in biodiversity conservation and ecologically sustainable development. It provides authoritative information on flora, fauna and biodiversity conservation to land managers, and the Victorian public."
