Prior to 1929 the sewer system at Glenelg, South Australia, served an area of approximately 692 acres, the sewage gravitating to a pumping station situated about one mile north of Glenelg. From this pumping station the sewage was elevated to the adjoining sand hills bordering the shores of St. Vincent's Gulf, and here disposed of by broad irrigation, the resultant seepage eventually finding its way into St. Vincent's Gulf. The necessity for greatly extending this system made it imperative that some more effective and up-to-date system of sewage treatment should be provided, and, with this idea in view, the design of a new sewage treatment works was commenced in 1929, and the plant was operational from 1933.
