In 1982, the Division returned once again to being a research centre, and was renamed the Centre for Irrigation Research. Eric Hoare was Chief of the Division from 28 August 1967.

Background:
Water Resources Research, Griffith, New South Wales, began in 1927 when CSIR took over the running of the Commonwealth Citrus research station. It studied problematic soil and irrigation in Murrumbidgee before shifting its focus to land survey and reclamation after a major flood and then drought in the region from 1939 to the early 1940s. During the Second World War the Division of Water Resources supplied vegetables to the allied forces based in the pacific. After the war the research carried out at the Division of Water Resources took on a more long term role focusing on potential future water and soil problems, and the role of water in the environment. This research included studies on the Murray Basin, water salinity and sustainable agriculture.
