The Macquarie Island Station was established in 1948 as a research station by the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions. It is located in the Southern Ocean, 1500 km from Tasmania and 1300 km from Antarctica. The station is controlled by the Antarctic Division, part of the Department of the Environment and Heritage.
