It continued as the federal government agency responsible for granting rights in patents, trade marks and designs. It incorporated the Patent, Designs, Trade Marks and Plant Breeder's Rights (PBR) Offices. It was a prescribed agency within the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources (ITR) but operated independently and reported directly to the Minister.
