<abstract>The Australian Geomechanics Society was established in 1970, but its origins date back to the Australian National Committee of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Institution of Engineers, Australia in 1953.

The Society is jointly sponsored by the Institution of Engineers Australia and the Australasian Institute of Mining &amp; Metallurgy.

It is affiliated with:
 - International Society for Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMFE/GE);
 - International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM);
 - International Association of Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG);
and it serves as an integrated geotechnical professional Learned Society.</abstract>
