Formed as the "Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers" (AIME) the inaugural meeting was held in Adelaide in April 1893. Founding members were drawn from men who were associated with the Broken Hill mines as well as those representing the various colonies.
In 1917, AIME had been invited to join with all the other colonial engineering societies, to become part of a federation of the existing engineering institutes. However, as many members were not engineers, such as mine managers and metallurgist, it decided to remain a separate organisation.
In 1919, the membership formally voted not to join the "Institution of Engineers, Australia". and to change its name to the "Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy" to recognise the range of technical professionals in the mining industry beyond just engineering.

Honorary Fellow 1991 - for his dedicated service to the mining industry and The Institute including terms as President, Vice-President, Councillor and member of various Committees. Also, for his active involvement with overseas kindred bodies.
Honorary Fellow 1988 - in recognition of his services in recording and presenting the history of Australian mining and for his contribution in raising the awareness of the heritage of the profession.

Awarded President's Award 1974 - for his original and largely independent research into patterns of ore genesis in layered rocks and for his publications including the volume Ore Petrology,1972, these achievements representing a contribution at an international level to the geology of ore occurrence.

President's Award 1980 - in recognition of his contribution to the publications of The Institute and his services as Honorary Editor since 1965.
