<biogHist>
The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) was founded in 1893, as the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers. The purpose of the Institute is to promote the sciences and professions relating to mining and metallurgy.

From their Web site, December 2001: "The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy represent the interests of professionals associated in all facets of the mining, exploration and minerals processing industries."
<p>Formed as the "Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers" (AIME) the inaugural meeting was held in Adelaide in April 1893. Founding members were drawn from men who were associated with the Broken Hill mines as well as those representing the various colonies.</p>
<p>In 1917, AIME had been invited to join with all the other colonial engineering societies, to become part of a federation of the existing engineering institutes. However, as many members were not engineers, such as mine managers and metallurgist, it decided to remain a separate organisation.</p>
<p>In 1919, the membership formally voted not to join the "Institution of Engineers, Australia". and to change its name to the "Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy" to recognise the range of technical professionals in the mining industry beyond just engineering.</p>
