This was assented by Queen Elizabeth II on 20 April 1970 when she opened the University during an official visit to Queensland. The University was based in Townsville, with campuses in Cairns and other regional centres. Its presecessor was the University College of Townsville (1961 - 1970). In January 1998 it became the James Cook University.
