It was forced to close from 1897 until 1905, due mainly to series of severe droughts which greatly reduced finances and student numbers. From 1983 until 1997, the college was part of the Victorian College of Agriculture and Horticulture (VCAH). In 1997, the college merged with similar departments at The University of Melbourne to form that university's Institute of Land and Food resources, later Faculty of Land and Food Resources). The College is located near the rural town of Horsham, approximately 300 km from Melbourne. Situated on 1500 hectares of land, Longerenong specialises in intensive farming.
