It was not until the 1970s that the plan was approved by Parliament. Construction of the Australian National Animal Health Laboratory (ANAHL) began in 1978. ANAHL was to be administered by the CSIRO. In 1985 the facility underwent a change of name, becoming the Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL).
