Summary

In 1894 the former Mines Branch (1883 - 1894) became the Mines Department (1894 - 1989). Department was engaged in cartographic, geological, mineralogical, engineering and metallurgical work. The Mines Department (1894 - 1989) also played a significant regulatory role with inspectors employed to check on the safety of mining machinery, ventilation and legislation outlining industrial relations and work rights and registers to provide licenses and track the ownership of mines. In 1989 the Mines Department (1894 - 1989) was renamed the Department of Resources and Energy (1989 - 1992).
