Summary

In 1888 the Central Bureau of Agriculture was founded, partly in response to 1887 inquiries and commissions into vegetable production in both South Australia and Victoria. The Central Bureau of Agriculture served an important educational role, providing information about soil, stock, crops and other agricultural matters. The Bureau existed alongside the Dairy Board and a council for the Agricultural College. From 1901 to 1902 a number of amalgamations occurred bringing all these bodies together with the Bureau to form the Department of Agriculture [II] (1902 - 1906).
