Summary

In 1951 the Department of Public Health was established absorbing the Central Board of Health (1873 - 1951). It appears this transformation from central board to department was based on recommendations made by a government health advisory committee. Medical staff from the Education Department and the government tuberculosis Director also fell under this new department. In 1978 a further amalgamation of Government health services occurred and the Department of Public Health (1951 - 1978) merged with the Hospitals Department (1940 - 1978) to form the South Australian Health Commission (1978 - 2004).
