Summary

The Woods and Forests Department was established in 1896 and was primarily concerned with the Timber trade in Western Australia. It was replaced in 1919 by the Forests Department (1919 - 1985) which was responsible for tourism, recreation, and research relating to Western Australian's forests in addition to the timber industry.
