Summary

The Lands Department was established in 1866 after the division of the Department of Lands and Works. It was responsible for the sale and lease of land in Queensland and more general land development and management including control of noxious weeds and pests like rabbits. In 1996 the Lands Department was renamed the Department of Natural Resources shortly before elements from the Department of Primary Industries (I) merged with it in 1998 officially forming the Department of Natural Resources (1998 - 2001).
