Summary

David Churchill became Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne and Victorian Government Botanist in 1971 after being Chairman of the Department of Botany at Monash University. During his tenure at the Gardens the Flora Survey section was established to survey and record plants in the field, with plant communities being defined and mapped. His research interests centred on biogeographic, evolutionary and ecological studies, particularly vegetation changes in recent geological times and the implications for current plant communities. Churchill was President of the Royal Society of Victoria from 1983 to 1985.
