Summary
Roger Hawken served as a civil engineer in New South Wales, Malay and Queensland. Throughout his career, he also lectured at the Ballarat School of Mines, the University of Sydney and the University of Queensland. Hawken was co-founder of the Institution of Engineers, Australia (1919), its inaugural President and instigator of the compulsory registration of consulting engineers. He worked on the initial design of the Sydney harbour bridge (which was later aborted) and researched widely in the areas of hydrology, earth pressure, and column design.
