Summary

The Ecological Society of Australia, founded in 1960, aims to: promote the study of all organisms in relation to their environment, and the application of ecological principles in the development, use and conservation of Australia's resources; provide advise to governments and other agencies on ecological principles; foster the conservation and responsible management of Australia's native biota; and facilitate exchange of information about ecology. Members come from a wide range of professions and interests. These interests are reflected in the Society's special interest groups (known as Research Chapters) which include agricultural landscape; arid ecology; Australian vegetation classification; fire ecology and management; insect ecology; invasive species; plant soil ecology; quantitative biology; science communication; seed ecology; theory of Australian ecosystems; and urban ecology. The Society offers an extensive range of awards and grants, including its Gold Medal, the Australian Ecology Research Award, and grants to students and early-career ecologists. It's publications program began in1962 when the first volume of its Newsletter was issued.
